“Why did you do this terrible thing? (In a normal conversational tone,)
Chenault arose, stood erect and erupted, “I hated her and I killed her; I hate you, and if I could have, I would’ve killed you, you dirty bastard. All Christians are my enemies.!” These are the exact quotes, from the only witness! F.B.I. told me that “…they had found in Chenault’s apartment a hit list with ten names; Martin Luther King, Sr. was at the top of the list!”
Dad rocked back on his heels as though he had been punched in the face. I grabbed his arm to lend support and was so upset by Chenault’s attack that I began to cry. I pulled Dad out of the cell toward the exit. “I hate this son-of-a-bitch,” I said to Dad.
He placed his right hand on my shoulder and without hesitating uttered the words which will always be remembered and associated with him: “Counsel, I cannot hate any man”
Stunned by his compassion and silenced by his conviction, I wiped away tears, took his arm and together walked to my car.
